To commemorate the nearing February 28th U.S. release of their In Our Time EP, Toronto alt-country quartet Cuff The Duke have released the latest in a series of inventive covers, John Lennon’s Instant Karma.

Says band member Wayne Petti (lead vocals, guitar, keys): “There aren’t many bands out there that aren’t in some way influenced by The Beatles. They are also a pretty tough band to cover. Doing a John Lennon song seemed just as sacred but we also felt that Instant Karma was a song we all loved so much that we had to cover it. We decided out of the gate that we wanted to do a faithful version. Not really try to reinvent the song or anything. In our opinions, it’s such a great song. If we did it any other way we would just sound bad and besides we really just enjoyed playing it like it is.”

Instant Karma follows the band’s previously-released interpretations of Smog’s Cold Blooded Old Times, Guided by Voices Smothered in Hugs, Dum Dum Girls Always Looking, and Billy Fay’s I Hear You Calling.

In Our Time marks Cuff the Duke’s fifth release and their second for Paper Bag Records. Their 2011 Morning Comes  album – produced by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor – is up for Best Adult Alternative Album at the upcoming 2012 Juno Awards.
